The Mine Action Information Center in conjunction with Colin King of C King Associates Ltd has recently updated the ORDATA database, covering the most commonly used mines in greater detail. The searchable database is managed and hosted by the MAIC.
ORDATA is an ordnance identification system. The user enters available information and the database searches based on those parameters.
ORDATA was produced many years ago using the best information and database structure available at the time. Although it has been updated and expanded since, most of the mine data is unchanged and a number of errors were present.
A revised version of the mines section—capable of use with a personal digital assistant (PDA)—was commissioned by the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate Humanitarian Demining Program, with the following aims:
- To eliminate misleading and potentially dangerous errors
- To create a "living" system that can be updated continuously
- To supplement the existing data with more information
- To reorganize the data structure to make it more useful
- To allow more powerful and flexible searching
The revised mines section now covers most of the more common mines, and it has the ability to add more at any time. It also paves the way to update and expand the sections covering other types of ordnance in a similar way.
