Subject
Mine action coordination with UN peacekeeping forces
Category
Mine Action, Relief and Development Integration
Situation
For the first time in UN peacekeeping history, a mine action coordination center has been established as an integral component of a UN peacekeeping mission.
Recommendation/
Comment
This structural set up has provided the UNMEE MACC access to two sources of funding (the Voluntary Trust Fund of the UN Mine Action Service and the UNMEE Assessed Contribution budget). This double funding access has ensured that the MACC has been continuously and adequately resourced. The establishment of a mine action integrated UN peacekeeping operation, which allows for the provision of two sets of funds for the mine action center, is a structural creation that ought to be considered in the set up of future peacekeeping missions where a mine action component is needed.
