Subject
Mini-Flail in Afghanistan
Category
Area Clearance Tracking
Situation
The Mini-Flail is currently employed in Bagram Afghanistan by US and Polish Sappers conducting camp expansion. The Mini-Flail is used as a complimentary tool for this mine clearance mission. Current techniques employ the Mini-Flail as the first step in area clerance. After the ground has been pummeled using the Mini-Flail, the next step is the mine sniffing dogs. When the dogs have completed their mission mine detectors finish the clearance operation.
Recommendation/
Comment
Although not 100% effective, this is a current technique used for camp expansion. The soil content in Bagram is mixed. There is, in some locations, a 6 to 8 inch covering of sand. Under this sand is a concrete hard surface that does create problems for the Mini-Flail.
