US observance of the Norwegian Flail--Hydrema--in Afghanistan
Category

Situation
Conceivable use of the Norwegian Hydrema for the US Military.
Recommendation/
Comment
Made in Denmark, the medium flail Hydrema provides the greatest area clearance capability currently in theater. Mounted on the rear of a wheeled chassis the flail can be transported via road or by C-130. To operate the driver simply spins his seat around and drives the flail backwards using a joystick. An onboard computer controls the depth and speed of the flail. The flail can clear an average of 1800m2 per hour depending on conditions. Norwegian tests have established that the rate of clearance exceeds 90%. The flail is normally operated in conjunction with sappers who sweep the ground before and afterwards to visually sweep the ground. The Hydrema will absorb an AT strike without damage to equipment or driver, who is protected by the blast plate and armor. The flail operates by detonating or crushing through contact with weighted chains.
