Subject
US Military MCAP dozer in Afghanistan
Category
Equipment
Situation
The Engineer Battalion received armored kits prior to deploying to Afghanistan. The process of applying the kits was arduous and permanently affixed the plates to the dozer.

The MCAP dozer with rake was able to clear a depth of 12 inches and withstand AP mines with slight minor damage.

With the modifications, the MCAP had limited use besides mine clearing.
Recommendation/
Comment
Due to the weight of the armor kits, it would take a C-17 or equivalent to transport it into mined areas. Proper planning should be considered when deploying the MCAP dozer.

Train mechanics on installing the armor kits prior to deploying.

The MCAP is very effective in large open areas, especially with the mine rake.
