Test design, material identification prodder
Experience/Advice
When testing the performance of a prodder with material identification feature, the following test factors should be included:
- target type, defined by the material (plastic, metal, wood, stone),
- soil type, defined by soil hardness, soil moisture content,
- prodding angle,
- prodding location (center or off-centre prodding) and
- prodding force.
It should be noted that in the referenced test no correlation was found between soil hardness and prodder performance. It was concluded that soil stickiness, which essentially determines the friction on the prodder needle, was probably more of a performance influencing factor for the prodder under consideration.
