Executive Secretary of the Chile National Demining Commission—Col. Rafael Guerra
Col. Guerra first spoke of the structure of Chile's demining program, which involves a number of government ministries working with the National Demining Commission (CNAD). He then discussed Chile's current mine situation, which consists of approximately 240,000 mines on 104 minefields as well as 104,000 stockpiled mines, 6,000 of which are for training purposes. Col. Guerra also mentioned that 59,192 mines were scheduled for destruction on August 25, 2003, which would put the country two years ahead of schedule. Col. Guerra went on to explain that Chile's goals for 2003 are to destroy all stockpiled mines by August 30 and to begin clearance in the "Tejas Verdes" minefield. For 2004, Chile's goal is to clear 14 minefields in three regions. Chile also has continued its mine risk education and victim assistance programs during 2003. | ||||||||||||||
