Dr. Ronalth Ochaeta began by recognizing the many contributions the OAS has made to mine action since the beginning of their demining program. The OAS is responsible for the clearance of 40,000 mines, the destruction of 500,000 stockpiled mines, the rehabilitation of 450 survivors and the overall reduction of landmine victims. These contributions have far reaching effects including a contribution to peace, the strengthening of national capabilities and mutual confidence building as the military and civilian sectors work together under this common goal. Through these far-reaching achievements, the OAS has become a model to the world. Dr. Ochaeta made it clear that none of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedicated support of the donor community.

He concluded by congratulating everyone on their hard work and continued dedication to the cause, and assured the conference participants that together; they can stop the use of landmines in the hemisphere.
