Introduction (back)
The Demining Technologies Information Forum (DTIF) held a workshop on
technology for mine action at the Liu Centre for the Study of Global
Issues, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada on 4-5 June,
2001. The workshop was organized by the Canadian Centre for Mine Action
technologies (CCMAT) with help from the Department of Foreign Affairs and
International trade (DFAIT), Mine Action Team.
The aim of the workshop was to establish a productive dialogue between
the developers and the users of mine action technology. The purpose of
this dialogue is to do a better job of incorporating the experience and
insight of the user community into technology development. Lack of
consultation between developers and users is a common complaint and has
contributed to difficulties in the successful deployment of new technology
to the field.
The two-day workshop was divided into four sessions:
1. Personal protective equipment
2. Mechanical assistance equipment
3. Test and evaluation
4. Wrap-up session
There was also an opportunity for poster presentations on related
topics which are part of the proceedings and are published in the DTIF
journal.
Each session began with two 30 minute presentations, representing the
developer's and the user's points of view, followed by a recorded
discussion guided by a moderator. The proceedings of the workshop,
presentations and edited discussion, were published in the DTIF Journal on
the Mine Action Information Centre (MAIC) web site maintained by James
Madison University.
