TRAVEL
- Arrivals and Departures
- Jet Lag
- Per Diem
The Mine Action Information Center will pick up all participants from Dulles Airport (IAD) on 16 May 2010 and provide a shuttle bus to transport participants to JMU's campus. The MAIC will also arrange transportation to Dulles Airport from campus on 18 June 2010. If absolutely necessary, you may arrange to arrive on 15 May and depart the evening of 17 June; however, such travel arrangements should be avoided if possible.
You should inform the MAIC after you have made your travel plans so that we can arrange travel to/from. Please be aware that the MAIC will only provide transportation to/from Dulles International Airport (IAD) and not any of the other airports in the Washington, DC, area.
Contact information for the JMU driver will be sent to you once transportation for participants has been coordinated.
By traveling to the United States, you have crossed several time zones. It takes approximately one day for the body to adjust for every hour gained or lost by traveling across time zones. If five time zones are crossed in a journey, then the traveler should expect an adjustment period of about five days. In order to make the adjustment easier it is best to maintain a regular sleeping schedule. The workday begins early in the United States (8:00 or 9:00), and it is not customary to take extended breaks for sleep during the day. It is recommended that participants adhere to a schedule of going to sleep around 21:00 or 22:00 in order to successfully adjust to the time difference and actively participate in the course.
Meals and other breaks will be taken at regularly scheduled times throughout the day. Breakfast should be taken before the course begins each day at 8:30. The course usually concludes at 17:00 each day, though this may vary depending on scheduling of special events. A preliminary schedule will be available in early May and e-mailed to participants.
As noted elsewhere, please plan to arrive with enough money (in US$) to cover expenses while traveling and during the first week of the course (approximately US$200). The per diem allotment for the course will be provided by JMU only once the course has begun. Please also make arrangments to convery currency either before departing your home country or before leaving Dulles Airport.
