Subject Matter Experts – Guest Lecturers

Alan Arnold (GICHD): Mr. Arnold taught modules on information management and the new IMSMA version 4.

Phil Bean (GICHD): Mr. Bean taught modules on mine action standards (IMAS and national standards) and their role in quality management.

Kerry Brinkert (ISU/GICHD): Mr. Brinkert discussed the Ottawa Treaty’s process support initiative for Survivor Assistance.

Carl Case (OAS): Mr. Case discussed the Military in Mine Action and the Mine Action Program of the Organization of American States.

Terry Collins (EOD Technology, Inc.): Mr. Collins participated in the panel on QA/QC, presenting on Quality Assurance Concepts for Mine Action Activities.

Bob Eaton (SAC): Mr. Eaton presented a module on using mine action data, in particular from the Landmine Impact Surveys, to bolster strategic planning.

Max Gaylard and Maria Vardis (UNMAS): Mr. Gaylard, the director of UNMAS, discussed the role of UNMAS in Mine Action, and Ms. Vardis presented on resource mobilization, specifically the Portfolio of Mine Action Projects.

John Jordan (US Department of Defense): Col. Jordan made a presentation on the Role of the U.S. DoD in Mine Action.

Theresa Kane and Stephen Meyers (Polus Center): Dr. Kane and Mr. Meyers taught the module on Survivor and Victim Assistance.

Ian Mansfield (GICHD): Mr. Mansfield taught modules on the role of the GICHD, mine action program structures and national legislation, and program evaluation.

Matt Murphy, Murph McCloy, Deborah Netland, and Tom Vajda (US State Department): These PM/WRA Program Officers gave a short briefing on the U.S. Humanitarian Mine Action Program and then met individually with participants to discuss matters of interest.

Julie Myers (UNICEF): Ms. Myers discussed UNICEF’s Role in Mine Action and taught the module on Mine Risk Education.

Allan Poston (UNDP): Mr. Poston, the UNDP CTA in Lebanon, served as an adviser and resource person for the final strategic planning exercise and facilitated a panel discussion on Quality Assurance/Quality Control in Mine Action.

Johan van der Merwe (UNOPS): Mr. van der Merwe presented on UNOPS’ Role in Mine Action and taught modules on Operational Planning, Mine Action Surveys and Quality Management.

Chris Weickert (CCMAT): Mr. Weickert presented on the topic of R&D in Mine Action, with a focus on the program of the Canadian Center for Mine Action Technology and the role of ITEP.

Mohammed Younus (UNDP): Mr. Younus made presentations on the role of UNDP in Mine Action, Gender and Mine Action, and Mine Action and Development.
